Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad
Community Bus Shelter, Baywood Village
Fish Hatchery Road, Chestertown, MD 21620

In 2021 our nonprofit initiated the creation of a 4’ x 8’ mural featuring

Harriet Tubman leading a group of enslaved people to freedom along the Underground Railroad.  The image was designed and created over a 12 week period by students and community members of Baywood Village in rural

Kent County.  This activity was our Rural Mural Program’s pilot project.

The Rural Mural Program is an arts education experience created to provide public arts in remote communities of Kent, Queen Anne’s and Caroline Counties.  During the mural painting process the children of Baywood - a HUD/Rural Development Housing Community - learned how Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad are connected to their own family history.  This mural was installed on the community bus shelter at

Baywood Village near Fairlee, MD in 2023.
